The typical dagger in this area is undoubtedly the keris (or kriss). This type of dagger has a wavy blade (although some have straight or lightly curved blades as well), and is widespread throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The double-edged blade can be in plain or damascene steel. Every part of the knife and sheath is meticulously crafted with endless variations. The wavy tip can inflict deep wounds which – when used properly – heal with difficulty. The keris is a highly symbolic object for the people of Indonesia; one that is thought to have its own “soul” (tuah), especially if it is very old and excellently crafted.
