Africa is undoubtedly the cradle of our species, and the continent where even today the greater part of our genetic diversity can be found. The items exhibited, consisting of acquisitions and donations dating from the 1940s onwards, represent almost the entire continent, including the island of Madagascar. Others were added in the 1970s, when the Museum organised expeditions to East Africa for the purposes of study and collection.
