SUMMARY:Discovering a diamond mine
DESCRIPTION:Discovering a diamond mine and estimating its true value are two of the greatest challenges in diamond exploration. Because diamonds are extremely rare minerals\, scientists use so-called ‘indicator minerals’ to value the deposits\, which can be worth up to $50 billion in a single deposit. \nGraham Pearson\, one of the world’s best-known geochemists\, talks about how a diamond mine is discovered and the methods used to explore in different locations\, from equatorial jungles and deserts to Arctic regions. In dialogue with the guest speaker will be Fabrizio Nestola\, Geochemistry Fellow 2024\, who\, together with him\, identified a very water-rich mineralogical inclusion within a diamond in 2014\, providing new data on the true water content of our planet. \nThe meeting includes a translation into Italian of the speech given in English; participation is free of charge with prior booking and does not include entrance to the Museum. \nGraham Pearson\, whose research focuses on the origin and evolution of the lithospheric mantle\, and his research group have developed innovative experimental methods for dating diamonds. A leading expert on kimberlites\, the rocks that transport diamonds from great depths to the Earth’s surface\, Pearson graduated from Imperial College London and received his PhD from the University of Leeds (UK). He then spent three years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington\, USA\, before becoming Professor of Geochemistry and Director of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Durham\, UK. In 2010\, he was awarded the Canada Excellence Research Chair at the University of Alberta in Edmonton\, Canada. Winner of numerous awards\, he recently became a Fellow of the Royal Society (UK). \nSign up\n\n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.\nNo Fields Found.

DESCRIPTION:The documentary\, which will be screened for the first time at the Study Day dedicated to Al-Khiday\, illustrates aspects of the life of the hunter-gatherer-fishermen who lived on the banks of the White Nile in the Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene\, and presents the results of the interdisciplinary archaeological research carried out at the site of Al-Khiday by the Centro Studi Sudanesi e Sub-Sahariani ETS of Treviso. \nThe documentary\, in English with Italian subtitles\, was produced by the Centro Studi Sudanesi e Sub-Sahariani ETS of Treviso in collaboration with the Universities of Padua\, Parma and Milan\, with funds for the Promotion of the Country System made available by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The director is Marco Tomaselli\, assisted by Donatella Usai\, who is the author of the texts. \nParticipation in the event is free\, by reservation only\, and does not include the visit to the Museum of Nature and Humankind.

SUMMARY:CICAP Fest 2023 - Fossil Hunt
DESCRIPTION:From October 13th to 15th\, the CICAP Fest returns to Padua. The topic chosen for this sixth edition is Facciamo la nostra parte (“Let’s pull our weight”)\, following the path traced by Piero Angela who\, in 1989\, founded the Italian Committee for the Control of Claims on Pseudoscience and accompanied it\, making it grow for more than thirty years. Promoted by Cicap in collaboration with the University of Padua\, the Municipality of Padua and the Province of Padua\, the event proposes three paths of investigation and analysis to reflect on three pivotal values for the construction of a future in which scientific\, civil and political progress proceed in harmony at the same pace: the value of responsibility\, the value of transparency\, and the value of facts. \nAlongside Palazzo del Bo and the Botanical Garden\, the Museum of Nature and Humankind is one of the venues of the University of Padua\, will be hosting the event. It offers the public a special activity for children and young people on Saturday\, October 14th: The Fossil Hunt. Among excavations\, casts of finds and extraordinary original fossils\, the youngest will test their observation and investigation skills and try to understand what our planet was like in the distant past and which animals and plants populated it. It is an opportunity not to be missed for all young aspiring palaeontologists! \nIt is an activity for families with children aged 7 to 12 and it is free of charge as part of CICAP Fest 2023. \nParticipation upon reservation: \nTurn 1: from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. \nTurn 2: from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

SUMMARY:Science 4 All - A sea of stories
DESCRIPTION:by and with Claudia Bellemo \nThe sea is a magical world\, a place of fantastic stories and extraordinary journeys\, full of extravagant creatures and dark depths. Let us dive into this marine universe\, and listen to some stories that will make us face the most important journey: the one inside ourselves. We will do so through the voices of princesses and princes\, turned into sea monsters and held hostage by evil fairies; we will tell the story of the child who fell in love with the sea and was brought back by the sea; we will face risky journeys\, even shipwrecks\, we will disembark on remote islands where we will meet strange characters. To sum it up\, it will be an adventure to sail together in the sea of imagination\, surrounded by real fish in the Museum’s ‘Hall of the sea’. \n The activity is suitable for families with children aged 5 years and over and will take place in a single turn for 35 people: \n\n turn: 10 am – 11 am.\n\nParticipation is included in the 30 September special ticket (6 euros for adults\, free for children and young people under 25). \nThe presence of an accompanying adult is required\, who must be registered for the activity. \nTo take part\, you need to book online using the link: bit.ly/S4A_UnMareDiStorie

SUMMARY:Science 4 All - A sea of shapes: a coral reef very close by!
DESCRIPTION:The sea\, as we know\, is full of wonders\, and some of them hide where we would not expect\, such as the ‘tegnùe’\, coral reefs that incredibly dot the sandy seabed of the Adriatic Sea off Chioggia. Don’t you believe that? Come and see and touch for yourself! You can admire sea urchins\, sponges\, shells… understand their great variety and beauty and\, finally\, make your own personal and creative contribution to building a colourful ‘coral reef’. \nThe activity is suitable for families with children from 4 years of age. \nParticipation does not require entry to the Museum\, and is free of charge.

SUMMARY:Science 4 All - Be Sapiens: the tangled maze of human evolution!
DESCRIPTION:Ancient fossil finds\, casts of skulls\, objects from lithic culture and more\, introduce us to the fascination of scientific discovery. They allow us to reconstruct how the history of Homo sapiens and all their ancestors developed over time and space. \nThe activity is suitable for families with children from 4 years of age. \nParticipation does not require entry to the Museum\, and is free of charge.
